Will Cannabis Help Cure the Coronavirus?

Two months ago, who knew that COVID19 would be a household name? Who knew that we would have to make important changes to our lifestyles; at work, and socially? The direct answer to the question is no, cannabis is not a cure for the Corona Virus, but it may help you in several different ways.

Keeping our immune system strong during these unimaginable times is of the utmost importance. According to Harvard Health, getting sleep is key to boosting and maintaining our immune system. Cannabis may just help you do just that. We have all heard the stories from our family and friends, each of them telling of a similar experience on how cannabis use relaxes them, helps subside anxiety, and in turn aids in getting quality sleep. Science is quickly underscoring these anecdotes.

CBD has also been shown to reduce self-harming autoimmune and inflammatory responses. It can act as an immune system modulator which means that it can adjust the level of activity depending on the body’s needs.

There is another study led by McMaster University’s Professor Eric Brown showing that cannabigerol (CBG) is effective in treating antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Brown stated, “CBG proved to be marvelous at tackling pathogenic bacteria. The findings suggest a real therapeutic potential for cannabinoids as antibiotics.”

The effect that cannabis has is different in each of us based on our individual biology and tolerance to the compound. Thankfully, CBD and other cannabinoids are a safe, non-habitual alternative to pharmaceuticals that can be dosed properly for the new and veteran user.

Keep in mind that not all cannabis products are created equal. Make sure you have a quality, whole plant (full spectrum), 3rd party tested product. While policy struggles to keep up with the fast pace of the cannabis market, it is imperative that we, the consumer, use due diligence to keep the market safe and honest.

Science is now showing that the number and variety of cannabinoids in the product you are using directly relates to how beneficial the product is for you. All mammals have what is called an endocannabinoid system. This system helps regulate physiological and cognitive processes including the aforementioned immune system, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory, among others.

Cannabis is not a cure all for COVID19, or any other virus or disease that we know of thus far. But, a little bit of research will show you how it may help boost immunity or ease symptoms.

Most importantly, take care not to aid in spreading this or any viruses by keeping a 6-foot social distance, washing your hands for at least 20 seconds (Hands cracked and dry? Don’t worry, there are cannabis creams and salves for that!), not touching your face, and self-isolating at the first sign of symptoms. Stay well rested, safe, and healthy.
